Tunnel Edge, Standedge - Norman Shaw

This famous tunnel was opened in 1811 and is on the canal linking the Ashton canal, Manchester with the Sir John Ramsden canal in Huddersfield. The main tunnel is 3 miles and 176 yards long and, with no tow path, the bargees (or leggers) had to walk the barges through the tunnel lying on their backs. The tunnel has recently been refurbished and re-opened by British Waterways.
