Kirkwood Hospice Panel

This panel was devised to celebrate the millennium in 2000.

The local Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Dalton, Huddersfield, which supports terminally ill people, was chosen to receive the panel so that it would give enjoyment to patients, visitors and staff.

The stimulus for the panel came from one of our members, Malcolm Till, who had produced a major work showing the crafts of the last 100 years carved in oak and measures 63 by 22 inches. Additionally, some of our members had seen the magnificent panel, carved in 2" lime, covering a wall 62 feet long and 15 feet high at the Three Counties Showroom at Malvern in Worcestershire. So our members set out to produce one of their own.

The panel was designed in April 1998 and completed in 1999 in good time for it to be handed over to celebrate the millennium. It consists of 37 panels carved in lime by many carvers and, when assembled, stands 8 feet long and 4 feet high and took more than 3,000 hours to complete. Each of the panels represents a place around Huddersfield or an activity that takes place there. It was formally installed at the Hospice on 5 September 1999.
