Hartshead Church - David Holt
This Norman church was a focal point during the rising of the Luddites in the early 19th century due to its convenient location. The Luddites tried to stop the introduction of mechanisation into the woollen industry, fearing for the loss of their livelihood, by smashing nearly-installed machinery. Many Luddites, killed by soldiers, are buried in this churchyard. In 1811, Patrick Bronte, the father of the Famous authors Emily, Charlotte and Anne, and his son Branwell, was curate here at the time of these Luddite rebellions. After falling into disrepair, the church was repaired and re-opened in 1881. 9"x12"
